On July 15th, Beijing time, the UEFA European Championship final concluded with Spain defeating England to lift the trophy. The Daily Mail wrote an article analyzing the future of England’s manager, Gareth Southgate.
“In this European Championship, England had many standout moments, such as Bellingham’s overhead kick, Saka’s world-class goal, Watkins’ last-minute winner, and Palmer’s long-range shot. However, relying solely on individual brilliance is far from enough; England’s performance was not sufficient to win the championship.”
“Who can lead England to the top? That’s a mystery. But clearly, it’s not Southgate. We are grateful for everything he has done, but to be honest, he should step down.”
“This England team cannot be compared to those of 2008, 2010, or 2012, but they are still an excellent team. However, last night, Southgate’s side did not display the tactical level they should have. They struggled like scavengers rummaging through trash bins in the evening…”
“If England could bring the trophy home, we might have forgiven Southgate’s overly conservative tactical style. But for most of this European Championship, they played ugly football, which we cannot ignore. It seems that England has no tactical design at all.”
