Recently, former Manchester United player Jaap Stam appeared on a show to discuss the club’s recent managerial change. He stated that Manchester United should have given Erik ten Hag more time, and the timing of the club’s decision to change managers is hard to understand.
Stam said, “Everyone knows that when a team changes managers, many players’ performances significantly improve because they want to prove themselves again. They all hope to showcase their abilities to the new manager.”
“But after a few weeks, once the coach has established his core squad, you’ll see some players become unhappy again, and then the cycle starts over.”
“Can Amorim lead this group of Manchester United players back to a level where they can compete for a top-four finish in the Premier League? It’s hard to say. We can focus on the manager, we can criticize the club’s recruitment, but we should also look at the players and their individual performances.”
“We must acknowledge that these players need to step up and show more consistency. If they don’t, we will see the same issues arise again.”
Talking about Ten Hag’s dismissal, Stam added, “Being sacked the day after losing to West Ham, I think it’s a very odd timing. If the club had discussed the team’s future with the coach and the manager himself said everyone was on the same page, you would naturally assume he could last longer.”
“We didn’t expect Manchester United to win every game; everyone knows the team lacks consistency and needs to perform better, that’s just the reality. So I find it strange that they sacked Ten Hag now. Manchester United had just given him a new contract, supported him in bringing in new signings, spent a lot of money, and the management knew they weren’t strong enough to compete for a top-four spot in the Premier League. So I think they should have given him more time to see what this squad could achieve by the end of the season. The season has only been going for two months, and they haven’t even secured any results yet. It’s too early to make such a decision.”
