Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes believes that Ruud van Nistelrooy’s capabilities far exceed those of a typical assistant and should be seeking a managerial position rather than continuing as Rui Jorge Amorim’s assistant. Currently serving as the interim manager at Manchester United, Van Nistelrooy has been impressive, leading the team to two wins and one draw. With Amorim set to officially take over as the permanent manager next week, discussions about Van Nistelrooy’s future role have intensified. He is considering whether to secure a place in Amorim’s coaching staff.
However, his former teammate Scholes has a different perspective, believing that Van Nistelrooy should not settle for an assistant coach position. “He looks like a manager, he’s passionate, and even dresses like a manager. His demeanor and communication are excellent, he’s friendly and composed, and he handles situations very well. I’m very sure that deep down, he yearns to be a manager again.”
Scholes further elaborated, “Given his impressive track record, especially his coaching experience in the Netherlands, it would be hard to accept a step back to an assistant role. I asked him about this before a game. Sometimes, even if you have your own insights, the final decision still lies with the manager, and your opinion might not be taken into account.”
Scholes believes Van Nistelrooy should aim higher: “He has a unique personal charm and gets along very well with the players. After every match, players who are substituted show him respect. Therefore, it seems more fitting for Ruud to continue as a manager. Of course, if he wants to stay and the club’s new management welcomes him, it can certainly be considered. After all, he still has an 18-month contract.”
This Sunday, Van Nistelrooy will lead Manchester United as the interim manager for the last time against Leicester City.
