Official: Arsenal's Sporting Director Edu Leaves, Confirms New Challenges Ahead

On November 5, Beijing time, Arsenal Football Club released an official statement announcing that the club’s sporting director, Edu, has officially left the club.

In July 2019, Edu joined Arsenal as the technical director. It was during his tenure that Mikel Arteta was appointed as the head coach of the Gunners, and their collaboration was highly successful. In November 2022, Edu was promoted to become the first-ever sporting director in Arsenal’s history.

During his playing career, Edu was part of Arsenal from 2001 to 2005, helping the team win the Premier League titles in the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.

According to reports, Edu may be joining the organization of Greek shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, who currently owns clubs such as Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and Olympiacos in Greece. Marinakis’ team has been in talks with Edu and is willing to offer him a significant salary increase. The negotiations are now in the final stages, and Edu is eager to take on this new role.

Edu expressed his farewell: “This has been a very difficult decision for me. Arsenal gave me this valuable opportunity, and I have worked alongside many excellent colleagues, especially head coach Mikel Arteta, with whom I have developed a close friendship. I am proud to have been a part of Arsenal’s history, but now it is time to pursue new challenges. I wish the future of Arsenal all the best.”
