Korean Media Stand Up for Son Heung-min: Rejects Saudi Arabia's Mega Contract, Only to Be Betrayed by Spurs' Extension Clause Activation

After British media revealed that Tottenham Hotspur plans to activate the extension clause in Son Heung-min’s contract, Korean media collectively spoke up for Son. As captain of Tottenham, Son rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia in the hope of signing a new contract with the club. Now, he feels betrayed by the club.

Son Heung-min’s current contract with Tottenham runs until June 2025, but it includes an option for a one-year extension, which can be activated unilaterally by Tottenham. The club is now considering activating this extension clause, much to the disappointment of Son and his representatives.

With Son set to turn 33 next year, he is hoping for a new contract, possibly the last of his career. By choosing to activate the extension clause, Tottenham would tie Son to the club until the summer of 2026.

Tottenham’s decision to only activate the extension clause clearly indicates their concerns about Son’s physical condition, leading them to take a cautious approach. For Son, the difference between becoming a free agent in the summer of 2025 and the summer of 2026 could be significant when it comes to finding a new club.

According to Korean media, Son has repeatedly turned down mega contracts from Saudi Arabian clubs and has also attracted interest from European teams, including Barcelona. Tottenham’s current move is seen as a betrayal of Son’s loyalty.
