According to Manchester City blogger “MCFCDaps,” Gündogan did not ask any of his teammates to give up their numbers upon his return to Manchester City. Instead, he will take over the number 19 shirt left by Alvarez.
Gündogan received the number 8 jersey after joining Manchester City in the 16/17 season. Last season, after transferring to Barcelona, he wore the number 22 shirt. After Gündogan’s departure, Manchester City handed the number 8 shirt to Kovacic.
This time returning to Manchester City, Gündogan does not intend to reclaim the number 8 shirt but instead will take over the number 19, which has been vacant since Alvarez’s departure.
During his previous stint at Manchester City, Gündogan made a total of 304 appearances, scoring 60 goals and providing 38 assists, helping Manchester City win five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups.
