On May 12, Beijing time, Bild analyzed Germany’s squad and suggested that national team coach Hansi Flick might not include Mats Hummels in this summer’s European Championship.
Despite being 35 years old, Hummels has maintained an excellent level of performance. In the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Borussia Dortmund eliminated Paris Saint-Germain with a 2-0 aggregate score, and Hummels was named man of the match in both legs. In the second leg, his header secured a double victory for Dortmund over PSG.
Bild mentioned that “Flick prefers the central defensive partnership of 31-year-old Antonio Rüdiger and 28-year-old Jonathan Tah.”
If Flick were to call up Hummels, questions would arise regarding his stamina and mobility in the more intense Euro schedule, as well as his willingness to accept a backup role. Furthermore, Hummels wouldn’t be able to continue his club partnership with Niklas Süle, who is uncertain to make the German national team.
