On July 6th, in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, Spain emerged victorious over Germany with a 2-1 win after extra time, securing their spot in the semifinals. After the match, Merino, who scored the decisive goal, gave his thoughts on the game.
Merino described the moment, saying, “When I scored the winner, my adrenaline shot up, it felt like I was going to die. Scoring in the 119th minute was possible thanks to the collective effort of the team. Being equalized in the 90th minute was a blow, but we deserved that winning goal in the end.”
The midfielder emphasized the high quality of the contest: “Everyone was looking forward to Spain versus Germany, a clash between two of the world’s best teams, a match with the level of a European Championship or even World Cup final. We’re a great team, capable of handling pressure. This stadium has been lucky for me, just as it was for my father who also scored here.”
