After sustaining a hamstring injury during Manchester United’s Premier League match against Luton on February 18th, Luke Shaw has been in recovery. Despite being named in England’s Euro squad, doubts remain over his availability for England’s opening Euro match against Serbia. Reflecting on his injury, Shaw admitted that he shouldn’t have played against Luton and that both he and the medical team share the blame.
Luke Shaw said, “I felt something against Aston Villa (a week before the Luton game), came off at halftime. I didn’t train all week, but after checks, it wasn’t too serious. I trained the day before Luton. You never say no when the manager asks you to play, but I shouldn’t have. It was a mistake from all of us, partly mine, partly the medical staff’s. I think everyone would admit that.”
Some fans have criticized Shaw for potentially playing for England while injured with Manchester United, questioning his commitment to the club. Shaw addressed these comments. “People have said, how can you not play for United but then play for England? Nobody knows the full story, but I was close to joining team training. I was pushing to be back for Manchester United’s remaining games and the FA Cup final, maybe I rushed it, and I injured my hamstring again. There were three months left until the FA Cup final, but the doctor said it would take six months to recover. I was gutted, but I always want to do everything for Manchester United. United will always come first for me, and that won’t change.”
