Jakarta – The eighth round of the 2024 F1 season will kick off this weekend in Monaco, following a challenging race for drivers last week in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna.
The city’s 3.37-kilometer street circuit is the shortest track on the calendar but with the most laps.
This weekend will witness the 70th Monaco Grand Prix on the F1 World Championship calendar. Since its debut in 1950, Monaco has hosted the event again in 1955, missing only one year, 2020, when the race was canceled due to the pandemic.
Ayrton Senna remains the most successful driver in Monaco, with six victories. As reported by the FIA, the legendary Brazilian driver won for the first time in 1987 with Lotus and then went on to win five consecutive times from 1989 to 1993 as a McLaren driver.
Monaco Circuit
Circuit length: 3.337 km
Race distance: 78 laps (260,286 km)
2023 Monaco Grand Prix winner: Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2023 Monaco Grand Prix: Verstappen, Red Bull (1:11.365)
Fastest lap record: Lewis Hamilton, 2021 (1:12.909)
The Monaco circuit features a 180-degree hairpin-shaped corner, where this year’s turn comes later and drivers navigate at just 45 kph.
A slight mistake from a driver could easily result in a safety car appearance in Monaco’s race, given the tight and narrow nature of the street circuit, with barriers lining the track.
So far, the points standings are led by Verstappen with 161 points. Chasing him is Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) with 113 points, followed by another Red Bull driver, Sergio Perez, with 107 points.
In the top five of the provisional standings, Lando Norris (McLaren) is closest with 101 points, while Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) has 93 points.
Meanwhile, the first day of the Monaco Grand Prix will take place on Friday, Indonesian Western Time (May 24th) at 18.30 and 22.00 for free practice sessions.
On Saturday (May 25th), there will be a third free practice session (17.30 WIB) and qualifying (21.00 WIB).
The main race of the Monaco GP will take place on Sunday (May 26th) at 20.00 WIB.
