November 21, according to Spanish media Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will not consider extending their current starting goalkeeper Pena’s contract until June next year, after the end of this season. This decision will depend on the recovery of Marc-André ter Stegen and the performance of Wojciech Szczesny.
Due to an injury at the beginning of the season, ter Stegen is almost out for the season. Subsequently, the club signed retired goalkeeper Szczesny. However, Xavi has chosen Iñaki Peña as the starting goalkeeper. Iñaki Peña’s contract is set to expire on June 30, 2026.
The report states that Barcelona does not want to rush into offering a new deal to Iñaki Peña, as they do not prioritize him in the same way they do with other players. Before making any decisions, the club wants to see how ter Stegen recovers from his long-term injury. Additionally, they need to evaluate Szczesny’s debut performance before deciding whether to extend the former Juventus player’s contract for another season.
