Undefeated WBO junior lightweight titlist and two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez Jr. (20-1, 13 KOs) and Canadian contender Steve Claggett (38-7-2, 26 KOs) successfully made weight today in Miami Beach, Florida. The pair will collide in a 12-round super lightweight championship bout this Sunday, June 30 (Beijing Time), with Lopez defending his WBO and The Ring Magazine belts at 140 pounds. Lopez weighed in at 139.4 pounds, while Claggett came in at 139.5 pounds, both clearing the limit on their first attempt.
The 35-year-old Claggett, currently ranked eighth by BoxRec at 140 pounds, has a professional record of 38 wins, seven losses, and two draws, with 26 of those victories coming by way of knockout. Standing at 5’8″ with a reach of 69 inches, Claggett has been on a nine-fight winning streak, holding the WBO International title in the same division. However, he has not faced any top-tier opponents in his career.
The 26-year-old Lopez boasts a record of 20 wins against one loss, with 13 knockouts, and is ranked fourth by BoxRec at 140 pounds. He stands at the same height as Claggett but has a slightly shorter reach of 68.5 inches. Lopez previously captured the WBA Super, IBF, and WBO lightweight titles by defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs), but lost a controversial decision in his first defense to George Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs). Since then, he moved up to 140 pounds and has won four consecutive fights, including a victory over then-top-ranked Josh Taylor (19-2, 13 KOs) last June. In February, Lopez defended his title against Jermell Ortiz (17-2-1, 8 KOs), winning by a less-than-convincing points decision.
In a preceding bout, former WBO featherweight champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez (13-2, 8 KOs) will face Mexican opponent Brandon Leon Benitez (21-2, 9 KOs). Ramirez weighed in at 124.8 pounds, while Benitez was 127.4 pounds.
