The Olympic men’s basketball group stages concluded yesterday for groups A and B.
In group A, Greece staged a comeback, defeating Australia 77-71. With Canada’s victory over Spain, Spain was relegated to fourth place, thus eliminating them from the tournament. This move propelled Australia to second place, ensuring their advancement. Greece ended up third in the group, with a net point difference of one behind Brazil. They are now hoping that Serbia can outscore South Sudan by three points or more in the C group, which would allow them to advance as one of the two best third-place teams. Canada secured first place and a top position in the group.
In group B, Brazil achieved a late surge in scoring, defeating Japan 102-84, securing their spot as the third team advancing ahead of Greece. The match between Germany and France was decisive; Germany emerged victorious against the host France, securing first place in the group. France, on the other hand, secured second place.
The games in group C will be held today. The United States must win against Puerto Rico by more than eight points to ensure an eighth-place finish. South Sudan, with a lead of only two points in net score over Greece, must either defeat Serbia or lose to them by three points or fewer to have a chance at advancing.
