On June 4th local time, the women’s singles quarterfinals at Roland Garros got underway with a seeded clash on Court Philippe Chatrier. Third seed Gauff, despite dropping the first set, staged a comeback, defeating eighth seed Jabeur 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 57 minutes.
Gauff
The 20-year-old American has now joined the ranks of the youngest players to reach multiple Grand Slam quarterfinals in this century, following Steffi Graf, Justine Henin, Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonareva, Maria Sharapova, and Iga Swiatek. In 2022, Gauff made it to the final, where she lost to Swiatek, finishing as runner-up. Their paths will cross again in the semifinals this year.
This French Open marks Gauff’s fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance in her career, at just 20 years and 82 days, making her the second-youngest player, after Sharapova, to advance to three consecutive Grand Slam quarters in a row.
With this win, Gauff improves her head-to-head record against Jabeur to 5-2, marking their second encounter at Roland Garros. She had previously defeated Jabeur in the fourth round in 2021, 6-3, 6-1.
Svitolina
In the second women’s singles quarterfinal, defending champion Svitolina powered through with a straight-set victory, 6-0, 6-2, over fifth seed Vaksova, extending her tournament winning streak to 19 matches and her clay-court dominance to 17 consecutive wins. This marks her fifth consecutive appearance in the French Open quarterfinals over the past five years.
