Brazil’s head coach Tite acknowledges that despite three months of team formation, the squad is yet to find equilibrium. He remains optimistic for their Copa América opener against Costa Rica, where he believes they will regain their form.
The 62-year-old took over in January amidst a poor performance in the South American World Cup qualifiers for 2026. Speaking at a press conference before the match against Bolivia, Tite stated, “We need balance and stability, as this team was assembled just three months ago, and we’re still in the rebuilding phase.” During his tenure, Brazil has remained undefeated in four friendly matches, defeating England and Mexico, and drawing with Spain and the United States.
However, the team lacks cohesion, with an unstable defense and a midfield lacking control. Their attacking prowess, featuring players like Vinicius Jr. from Real Madrid, Rodrygo from Barcelona, and Raphinha, provides excitement. Tite adds, “We’re still building the squad; some players might not have expected to be here.” Notably, experienced players like Thiago Silva and Casemiro were not called up, nor were Premier League-based strikers Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus included.
Despite the lack of experience, Tite maintains faith in the team’s potential. “They are all professionally trained athletes, playing for top clubs in Brazil and globally. That’s why I believe we can have a successful match,” he said.
17-year-old Enzo Fernandes, who will join Real Madrid after the tournament, garners attention, but is likely to start on the bench. Tite commented, “If there’s no balance, we must adapt. Enzo understands and stays calm. Perhaps soon, because he’s a technically gifted player.”
Against Costa Rica, who have participated in three consecutive World Cups, themselves in a transition phase, Brazilian captain Danilo emphasizes the need for respect. “Costa Rica has a solid defense, quick counterattacks, and fast players. In football, no opponent is easy,” he says.
Danilo underscores the team’s youth and the importance of a shift in focus. “We have a young squad, with some making their debut. It’s time to change the tone, reduce laughter, and concentrate on the game,” he concludes.
