According to Spanish outlet COPE, a female referee named Marta is set to become the first woman to ascend to professional football in Spain.
On Monday morning, the Royal Spanish Football Federation announced promotions and demotions for referees and assistant referees. A female referee, born in Palencia and affiliated with the Tenerife Refereeing Committee, has been promoted to the Spanish Second Division. Full name Marta Huerta de Aza, she is poised to become the first woman in Spain’s history to officiate in adult professional football matches.
Other promotions include assistant referee Judith Romano Garcia moving up to La Liga; Silvia Fernández Pérez advancing to the Second Division; Olatz Rivera Olmedo and Eugenia Gil Soriano entering the Spanish Regional Premier League.
