Recently, there has been constant criticism of Southgate’s selection choices. Former Spanish football star Cesc Fàbregas shared his thoughts in an interview, suggesting that such discussions are irrelevant, as he himself played out of position and still won a major tournament.
The recent controversy surrounds Trent Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield for England despite being a defender for Liverpool, and Phil Foden operating on the left wing for the national team, despite usually playing on the right for his club. Many believe these players’ unfamiliar positions have contributed to England’s underwhelming performances.
Fàbregas commented, “It’s a very interesting debate, but you have to remember that Spain won the Euros in 2012 with me playing as a striker, Iniesta on the left wing, and Silva on the right wing – all three of us were essentially central midfielders. Position doesn’t really matter; what counts is the ability to read the game and make your presence felt with your individual qualities.”
