In the second round of Group E matches at the European Cup, France will face their strongest opponents, the Netherlands. Ahead of the game, France’s vice-captain, Antoine Griezmann, spoke in a press conference about his intentions to bounce back from their lackluster performance in the first round.
Addressing concerns about Mbappe’s injury, Griezmann said, “Kilian is doing well, his nose is slightly swollen now. We’ll assess it until the last minute based on how he feels. We’re ready, everything’s smooth, but I’m not sure if he’ll play. He’s one of the world’s best, and his presence makes a big difference.”
Griezmann, who was less active against Austria, expressed a desire to regain his form: “I’m trying to find space on the pitch where I wasn’t as involved in the previous match. I wanted to link up more with the forwards, but it didn’t go as planned. So, I hope to get more touches in tomorrow’s game.”
Refusing to make excuses for his performance, Griezmann acknowledged his age, saying, “I’m not frustrated, but I must admit I had fewer touches than usual (smiling). Now, physically, I feel great. During friendlies, I was a bit fatigued, but at 33, recovery isn’t as swift. But I’m fully ready now.”
When asked about criticism of France’s matches being “boring,” Griezman quipped, “Boring? That’s for you guys to decide! (laughs) You often use that word! Sometimes, we need to focus on solid defense and deny our opponents, like against Austria. I’m delighted with the team’s performance, and I try to read the game well, knowing when to step up, and most importantly, to score goals.”
Regarding the Netherlands, Griezmann shared his thoughts: “I really appreciate Koeman’s coaching style; he’s direct with his players, always telling me his honest opinions, which not all coaches do. I enjoy the Dutch style, and playing against them will be entertaining. Yes, they lost de Jong, but they have replacements who can control the game effectively, making them a formidable opponent.”
