In a recent European Championship match that ended with Hungary’s 1-0 victory over Scotland, a shocking incident occurred when Hungarian player Márton Varga lost consciousness after a collision with opponent Grant. Following the game, Hungarian captain Gergő Szoboszlai called for changes to UEFA regulations.
During the match, Varga’s collapse prompted a delay in the arrival of the medical team, which angered not only Szoboszlai but also the entire Hungarian squad. Speaking post-match, he expressed concern, saying, “That scene was terrible. I don’t fully understand the medical protocols, but I believe they should be immediately on the field to treat the player, not dawdling before leaving. While I can’t dictate everything, I urge UEFA to reconsider some aspects.”
“When someone goes down seriously, they should be attended to immediately, even if the game isn’t stopped. Those few seconds could make a significant difference in their condition,” he emphasized.
However, UEFA has since stated that their existing rules do not hinder prompt medical care for injured players on the pitch.
