It has been reported that the starting goalkeeper position for the German national team has become a topic of debate ahead of the European Championship, due to recent errors made by Manuel Neuer in several matches.
According to AS, following Neuer’s mistake in the friendly against Greece on June 8th, discussions have arisen about who should be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper for Euro 2024. This is not the first time the Bayern Munich goalkeeper has made mistakes in recent weeks.
Previously, Neuer disappointed Bayern Munich fans in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, where he made an unfortunate error. Specifically, in the 88th minute, the 38-year-old failed to save Vinicius’ simple shot, which led to Joselu’s late goal. Ultimately, Bayern lost to Real Madrid 3-4 on aggregate.
Additionally, the veteran keeper also erred in a friendly against Ukraine, nearly costing Germany dearly in the 89th minute. These blunders have raised questions among fans about Neuer’s suitability as the starting goalkeeper for the national team.
Bild reports that in a survey of 90,000 people, 72% chose Marc-André Ter Stegen as Germany’s starting goalkeeper for Euro 2024. Nevertheless, despite the controversies surrounding Neuer’s form and ability, the 38-year-old still enjoys the trust of head coach Nagelsmann and the German national team management.
In a recent interview, German team sports director Rudi V?ller emphasized the management’s support for Nagelsmann’s decision. “I can only agree with Nagelsmann’s view. I understand the criticism of Neuer, but let’s not forget the world-class saves he has made,” V?ller said.
Germany will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland on June 14th, followed by matches against Hungary on June 19th and Switzerland on June 23rd.
