According to a report by The Athletic on June 23, Slovenia’s emerging forward Benjamin Sesko is currently in the process of recovering from an injury, casting uncertainty over his participation in the crucial match against England.
Sesko sustained an injury towards the end of last season, but this didn’t stop the 21-year-old from featuring in two games for the national team during the group stage of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, where he impressed. However, he was substituted late in the second group game against Serbia and has since been under the care of the medical staff, raising concerns about his availability for the June 25 encounter with England.
It is understood that Sesko’s Friday assessment was encouraging, giving him a chance to start against England, although no final decision has been made.
Slovenia currently sits third in Group C with two points and must at least secure a draw against England to have a chance of advancing as one of the four best third-placed teams to the round of 16. A victory could improve their group standing and potentially send them directly into the knockout stages.
Despite high expectations, Sesko is yet to register a goal or assist in this edition of the Euros. Last season, he scored 18 goals and provided two assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for RB Leipzig.
Since making his international debut for Slovenia in 2021, Sesko has accumulated 31 caps and scored 11 goals. His impressive club performances have attracted attention from several Premier League giants, with Arsenal showing particular interest. Nevertheless, Sesko opted to extend his stay with Leipzig, signing a contract until 2029, temporarily putting a move to the English top flight on hold.
