In the opening match of the Euro group stage, Spain defeated Croatia 3-0, but today, some unwelcome news has emerged about their starting goalkeeper, Unai Simón.
According to Relevo, Simón injured his wrist in a sports accident a few months before Euro 2024. He opted against surgery at the time and continued playing, with medical experts deeming the injury non-serious. However, during the tournament, Simón began experiencing discomfort in his wrist, leading to a recommendation for a minor operation to alleviate the persistent pain.
The 41-time international goalkeeper is a key figure for the national team, and upon learning of his injury, Simón expressed a desire to handle it cautiously, avoiding unnecessary attention.
Simón has decided to undergo surgery after the Euro concludes. Although this will delay his return to club action, his club has already extended the contract of another goalkeeper, ensuring no shortage of options. Following the surgery, he is expected to return to full fitness around mid-August and gradually compete for his starting position once more.
