Assistant coach Weghorst believes that having players from the same club can be beneficial for a national team, and thus he is looking to Manchester United duo Eriksen and Hojbjerg to demonstrate this at the Euros.
Weghorst, a former Denmark international himself, currently serves in head coach Hjulmand’s coaching setup. In an interview with ESPN, he said, “It’s always beneficial to try and tap into the understanding that players have from their club partnerships, especially when you’re talking about great players like Christian and Rasmus. It’s been a key factor in Danish football history too. In the 80s, we had many Ajax or Anderlecht players, and they were all at a high level, playing together and then bringing that chemistry back to the national team – it was fantastic. In 1992, when Denmark won the Euros, there were 7-8 players with connections to Brondby.”
Weghorst also emphasized the importance of experienced players like Eriksen in major international tournaments. He added, “Eriksen remains an outstanding player with vast experience. We must remember how crucial it is to have players who’ve been there before, who’ve played in significant matches, and have tried everything in these competitions.”
