Following Serbia’s 0-1 loss to England in the first round of Group C on June 17 at 03:00, captain Dusan Tadic attended the post-match press conference, publicly questioning Coach Stojkovic’s decision to keep him on the bench. Coach Stojkovic responded promptly, defending his choice.
Tadic stated, “I’ve talked with the coach, and while we had a good conversation, it’s hard for me to accept being a substitute, especially against England as the team captain and a key player. I believe without hesitation that I’m the best player in the national team and deserve a starting spot. I respect the coach’s decision, but if I were to play the full 90 minutes, I could contribute more. If the coach only wants me for 30 minutes, then I’ll give 30 minutes, respecting his choice, but I’m clear that I wish to play the entire match.” (Note: Tadic replaced Ljajic in the 61st minute of the second half.)
Coach Stojkovic countered, “Many are asking why Tadic didn’t start. It’s not about right or wrong; you have to have your own vision, and that’s why I’m here as the head coach. Tadic’s non-start was part of the tactical plan. I wanted him fresh, as he is a decisive player. I intended for him to change the game when he came on as a substitute, and that’s why he was on the bench.”
