With the 2024 European Championship looming, former German goalkeeper Lehmann has expressed his preference for France over England. He believes that Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller remain crucial to Germany’s chances, while questioning the decision not to include Mats Hummels in the squad.
Lehmann emphasizes the significance of home advantage, “Having the whole nation behind us is tremendous. We experienced this in the 2006 World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina in Berlin.” Regarding Neuer, he praises the current number one, “Neuer is still one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Despite past errors, it’s highly unlikely he’ll make consecutive mistakes in the Euros.”
The exclusion of Hummels, who had an impressive Champions League campaign, draws criticism from Lehmann, “If two central defenders reach the Champions League final together and one isn’t picked for the Euros, that’s a mistake. If it were up to me, I’d have selected both Hummels and Schlotterbeck. However, Germany has opted for Rudiger, and the coach will need to manage that well.”
Lehmann argues that Joshua Kimmich should play in midfield rather than at right-back, where he believes Jan碧塞克 would have been a better choice. On the contest between Kai Havertz and Niclas Füllkrug, he sees them as evenly matched. Regarding veteran Müller, Lehmann highlights his importance, “Müller remains one of the smartest players, always understanding what’s needed from the bench and appearing in dangerous areas.”
Commenting on England, Lehmann identifies their defensive vulnerabilities as a weakness, “Their defense isn’t solid, and they lack a top goalkeeper. Nevertheless, they have exceptional players like Bellingham, Foden, and Kane. Consequently, I favor France’s chances to win the tournament.”
