According to the official social media of the ATP Tour, Djokovic is about to embark on his defending journey at the 2024 US Open. Since Federer’s five consecutive titles from 2004-08, no one has been able to successfully defend their title at the US Open. Can Djokovic change this? “I didn’t realize this before; I only knew that this situation might have persisted for five to ten years, but I didn’t know it had been so long. Hopefully, there will be a change this year, I mean, that’s my goal. My goal has always been to strive to reach the finals and compete for the championship, and there’s nothing different about my mindset or approach this year.”
Djokovic said, “People ask me, since you’ve won everything after getting the gold medal, what else is there to win? I want to say that I still have motivation, I still have the competitive spirit, I still want to create more history, and enjoy the fun of the tour. I still want to inspire many young people to watch tennis and play tennis. These are all reasons why I continue to move forward. Grand Slam tournaments are the pillars of our sport; they are the most important tennis events in our history. So, if you don’t have the drive and inspiration to perform at your best level in a Grand Slam event, it’s hard to do so anywhere else.”
This year, Djokovic will strive to defend his title at the US Open for the first time. If successful, it would be his fifth US Open title and 25th Grand Slam title. “The US Open is a Grand Slam tournament that boasts the world’s largest tennis stadium, its night matches are very famous, the most famous in our sport,” said Djokovic, “I will play my first match on Monday night, and I can’t wait to play under the lights. The noise and vitality of this stadium are unlike any other place. I’m looking forward to it.” Djokovic’s first opponent is Moldovan player Albert, with the match expected to take place around 9 AM on Tuesday.
