In a recent show, Scholes discussed some of Manchester United’s signings over the years with Carragher and journalist David Ornstein, particularly those that were less successful.
Scholes first mentioned the greatest signings in Manchester United’s history – Cantona and Rooney, whose contributions to the team are indelible. Then, Carragher asked Scholes if he thought Anthony was one of the worst signings for Manchester United, but Scholes countered, “If we’re talking about transfer fees, then Anthony wasn’t a good deal indeed, but Alexis Sanchez was also a huge disappointment.”
Scholes believes that the worst signing in Manchester United’s history is not Anthony, but Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, who worked with him for two years. He said, “I think Mark was an excellent goalkeeper at Aston Villa. But when he joined Manchester United, his professional attitude disappointed me. Honestly, it was ridiculous.”
Scholes recalled a scene from training: “Usually, our shooting practice lasts 15 to 20 minutes, but after just three shots, Mark was already out of breath. I’ve never seen anything like it; he couldn’t even kick the ball past the halfway line during an away game, and the weather was perfect, with no wind.”
He also defended Veron, saying, “Juan is an outstanding player in Europe; I don’t know why he performed poorly at Manchester United. In my opinion, the worst signing was Bosnich.”
On this, Carragher joked, “Maybe Mark will respond on social media? He won’t let this opportunity slip by.”
Scholes laughed and said, “He’s bound to react, isn’t he?”
Mark Bosnich joined Manchester United on a free transfer from Aston Villa in the summer of 1999, originally to replace Schmeichel. After two years with Manchester United, Bosnich moved to Chelsea in 2001. It is rumored that Sir Alex Ferguson had high hopes for this goalkeeper, but due to Bosnich’s improper weight management, Ferguson could do nothing to salvage the situation.
