In today’s preliminaries, Sun Yang swam a time of 3 minutes 54.98 seconds, ranking first in his heat and second overall, advancing smoothly to the final.
After the first 50 meters of the final, Sun Yang was temporarily in second place; after 100 meters, Sun Yang was in third place; at the 150-meter mark, Sun Yang had moved up to second place, but was over one second behind the leader; at the 200-meter mark, Sun Yang had reduced the gap to half a second, still in second place; at the 250-meter mark, Sun Yang took the lead; at the 300-meter mark, Sun Yang had extended his lead to 0.6 seconds; after 350 meters, Sun Yang led by nearly two seconds; at the end of 400 meters, Sun Yang touched first to win the title, with a time of 3 minutes 49.58 seconds!
