In a recent Olympic men’s football group stage match, Guinea U23 lost 0-3 to USA U23 and finished at the bottom of their group, thus being eliminated.
This Olympics, the most notable player for Guinea is undoubtedly Naby Kaita, who missed most of last season due to injury. In April this year, he fell out with his club over playing time, leading to suspension and fines by Bremen. As a result, he only played in five games for Bremen last season, totaling just 107 minutes.
However, participating as an overage player in this Olympic men’s football tournament, he seems rejuvenated. He played 87 minutes in the opening match against New Zealand, 77 minutes in the game against France, and the full 90 minutes in the final group stage match, accumulating a total of 164 minutes on the pitch—already exceeding his total playing time from last season at Bremen.
The relationship between Kaita and Bremen appears irreparable, and it remains to be seen what his future holds.
