GOAL has compiled some statistics on the gold medals awarded in Olympic men’s football.
Hungary is the most successful team in the history of Olympic men’s football, having stood atop the podium at three Olympic Games—in 1952, 1964, and 1968. Great Britain shares the record for the most gold medals in Olympic men’s football with three; however, in addition to its three golds, Hungary also holds one silver and one bronze medal, whereas Great Britain does not have any silvers or bronzes.
Brazil, Argentina, the Soviet Union, and Uruguay have each won two gold medals in Olympic men’s football. Uruguay is the only country to have won two gold medals in Olympic men’s football without ever winning a silver or bronze medal. Brazil’s recent two gold medals were won at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, and prior to that, they had only claimed three silver and two bronze medals.
