On July 22, anti-domestic abuse campaigner David Challen called on Manchester United to donate the £27 million transfer fee from Mason Greenwood’s sale to a charity.
Mason Greenwood has been transferred to French Ligue 1 club Marseille, and this transfer could bring in up to £27 million for Manchester United, with Marseille already having paid £24 million of the transfer fee. Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since January 2022. He faced charges including attempted rape, controlling behavior, and coercion, which were all dropped in February 2023.
However, Greenwood will no longer play for Manchester United. In the 2023-24 season, he was loaned to Spanish La Liga club Getafe, where he played 36 games and contributed 10 goals and 6 assists, performing notably. At the end of the season, Manchester United sold Greenwood to Marseille.
Anti-domestic abuse campaigner Challen said, “Manchester United is a major club with an annual income of hundreds of millions of pounds. They should have dismissed Greenwood, but they only care about their own financial situation, built at the expense of women’s rights. It is a sad act that it took Manchester United until the last moment to be willing to engage with women’s charities and they have not made any donations yet.”
