On the morning of August 6, the French U23 team, after a grueling extra-time match, defeated Egypt 3-1. This victory marks their first entry into the Olympic men’s football final in 40 years. They will now face Spain, who beat Morocco 2-1 in the other semi-final, for the gold medal.
The French team conceded the opening goal but Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized late in regular time and scored again in extra time for a brace, complemented by Michael Olise’s goal, securing Didier Henry’s side’s triumph.
“It’s an incredible night!” exclaimed head coach Henry post-match. “All the credit goes to the players. Egypt put on an impressive display tonight, but we never stopped chasing victory, and the fans’ support gave us endless energy.”
He added, “We are guaranteed a medal now, but our aim is to win the football gold after 40 years. In the final, we’ll be up against a strong Spanish side, which will be a true test.”
The last time France won Olympic football gold was at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
With seven minutes remaining, Mateta equalized off an Olise assist.
In extra time, Egypt’s Omar Fayed was sent off with a red card for fouling Desire Doue, leaving them down a man. Mateta then headed in the go-ahead goal in the 99th minute.
“This is a dream night,” Mateta reflected, “but my dream isn’t over yet; I need one more night to realize it. I dedicate this victory to all the fans, who didn’t stop cheering even when we were behind.”
Olise also scored three minutes into the second half of extra time, sealing France’s win and sending Egypt to the bronze medal match against fellow African side Morocco.
