Previously, Carragher stated in an interview that over the past few years, Liverpool and Manchester City have been at the same level, engaging in one of the greatest rivalries in Premier League history. However, his counterpart Neville holds a different view.
Neville said, “Carragher’s claim that Liverpool and Manchester City’s rivalry in recent years is the greatest in Premier League history is offensive. From 1998 to 2004, Arsenal won the title three times, and Manchester United won it four times. That was a thrilling, intense, and high-quality contest where your opponent was equally matched with everything you desired. In contrast, over the last seven seasons, Liverpool has only won the title once, while Manchester City has dominated and obliterated them.”
Arsenal won the Premier League title three times during the 1997-98, 2001-02, and 2003-04 seasons, while Manchester United claimed the title four times in the 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01, and 2002-03 seasons, staging epic battles during those years. In recent years, however, Liverpool only secured the league title once during the 2019-20 season, while Manchester City has lost the title just once since the 2017-18 season.
