In a match against bottom-placed Nantong Zhiyun, Shanghai Port easily secured a dominant 8-1 victory at home, marking their 14th consecutive win in the Chinese Super League (CSL), breaking the previous record of 13 consecutive wins held by Shandong Taishan and Guangzhou Evergrande. During this winning streak, Shanghai Port scored an incredible 56 goals, averaging four goals per game.
The first team to achieve 13 consecutive wins in the CSL was Shandong Taishan, who accomplished this feat during the 2006 season. Starting from Round 14, they secured 13 consecutive victories and ultimately won the championship without much competition. Shandong Taishan’s record remained unbroken until Guangzhou Evergrande emerged and matched it, but no other team managed to surpass it.
The CSL began to decline from the 2020 season, but Shanghai Port quickly rose to become a top-tier powerhouse through consistent investment. This season, starting with a commanding 5-0 away win over Qingdao Hainiu, Shanghai Port has been on a winning streak, drawing ever closer to matching the records set by Shandong Taishan and Guangzhou Evergrande.
In particular, in a heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou, Shanghai Port narrowly defeated Henan 1-0, extending their winning streak. This is one of only two games in which Shanghai Port won by a single goal margin during their 14-game winning streak; the other was a 2-1 away victory over Meizhou Hakka.
Aside from these two narrow victories, Shanghai Port dominated all other 12 matches, including two 5-0 victories over Qingdao Hainiu, a 6-0 rout of newly promoted Shenzhen Xinpengcheng, a 5-2 win against Changchun Yatai, and a 5-3 victory over Qingdao West Coast. In their clash with Chengdu Rongcheng, Shanghai Port secured a 2-0 victory, while they triumphed 5-1 against Beijing Guoan in the Beijing-Shanghai derby. They also vented their frustrations against Zhejiang with a 3-1 win in the Yangtze River Delta Derby.
During their 14-game winning streak, Shanghai Port scored a total of 56 goals, averaging four goals per game. While it is difficult to compare this dominance with that of Shandong Taishan and Guangzhou Evergrande during their winning streaks, such an offensive outburst resulting in 14 consecutive wins is unprecedented in the CSL. But when will another team come along to challenge this record?
