On July 31, the 2024 Paris Olympics enter their fifth day of competition following the opening ceremony, with 20 gold medals to be awarded across various events including diving, rowing, judo, and swimming.
Here’s an overview of today’s highlights:
The “two little ones” of diving, Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan, will compete in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform final. For China’s dream team, synchronized events are virtually a guaranteed win. We look forward to seeing the “splash disappearance act” performed in Paris.
The women’s trap shooting final will take place at the Châteauroux International Shooting Center, with two Chinese athletes participating, one of whom, Wu Cuicui, has a chance at winning the gold medal. The rowing events will also reach their finals, including the women’s quadruple sculls, where defending champions China will face stiff competition.
The men’s all-around gymnastics final will also take place. Zhang Boheng and Xiao Ruoteng will refocus and head to the individual all-around final, facing tough opposition from Japanese athletes Daiki Hashimoto and reigning champion Kōhei Uchimura.
The Chinese women’s basketball team will play against Serbia. In their first group stage match, Serbia defeated Puerto Rico, putting them in a favorable position for qualification. Meanwhile, China lost to Spain by a single point in overtime. According to Olympic rules, the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams advance to the quarterfinals.
The swimming events will award five gold medals in the early hours of August 1. Among these, the men’s 100m freestyle “fly-fish battle” is highly anticipated. Pan Zhanle, who broke the world record at the Doha World Championships earlier this year, aims for a strong performance. Dong Zhihao advanced to the men’s 200m breaststroke final, while Qin Haiyang placed 10th in the semifinals and did not qualify for the final.
In BMX freestyle, China has made significant progress during the Paris Olympic cycle. Sun Jiaqi and Deng Yawen will compete together, hoping to stand on the podium and achieve a breakthrough for Chinese BMX freestyle.
Several badminton matches will also take place in the early hours of August 1, including the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles, featuring a “Chinese derby” between Zheng Siwei / Huang Yaqiong versus Feng Yanzhe / Huang Dongping.
