According to The Athletic, David de Gea has told close friends that he would be willing to return to Manchester United should current manager Erik ten Hag leave his post.
Since bidding farewell to Old Trafford on a free transfer last summer, De Gea has been out of contract for over a year and has had to maintain his fitness through personal training.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding his future at the time of his departure, De Gea, a champion goalkeeper for Manchester United, did not receive a proper send-off. He was also reportedly left disappointed by then-manager Erik ten Hag and football director Matt Judge.
It is understood that De Gea previously informed close friends that he would be happy to return to Old Trafford should both individuals depart from Manchester United. While Matt Judge has since left following a management reshuffle at the club, Erik ten Hag, who was close to being sacked, ultimately signed a contract extension.
The Athletic’s analysis suggests that with Ten Hag still in charge and goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson having departed, it is unlikely that De Gea will return to Manchester United this summer. His potential destinations include clubs in Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer, although staying in European football remains a possibility for him.
