August 4, Spanish newspaper Marca published an interview with the world record holder in the 100 meters, Usain Bolt.
Bolt said that his 100-meter record is currently safe. “I think the 100-meter record is safe for now. Most current athletes are running times between 9.70 and 9.80 seconds recently. However, I should have run under 19 seconds in the 200 meters (he ran 19.19 seconds in 2009), which I would have liked to achieve during my career so the record could stand for longer.”
Bolt is a fan of Manchester United and when asked if he plans to invest in the club, he said: “Well, there are new investors who have come on board recently, and I hope things improve over the next few years. I try to watch as many games as possible, and I am closely connected to the club. It was Van Nistelrooy who made me a Manchester United fan, and I’m happy that he’s back at the club as part of the coaching staff now.”
Bolt also praised Cristiano Ronaldo: “I admire Ronaldo a lot. I respect how he has managed to stay at the top level for such a long time. The way he takes care of his body and his desire to win are the same as they were when he was 18!”
Regarding his own football experience, Bolt said: “It was a great time and experience. I watched football since I was a kid, and I enjoy playing it. Doing this after retiring is a good thing.”
On a comparison of speed between himself and Mbappe, Bolt said: “Speed in athletics and football is completely different. Sprinters train to run 100 or 200 meters quickly on a straight line or curve. Football players need to run fast repeatedly over distances of 20 or 40 meters and be able to change direction quickly with and without the ball. These two cannot be compared. I ran 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters, but the fastest football player might only manage around 10.3 or 10.4 seconds. I think Mbappe isn’t concerned about his 100-meter time; he just needs to keep scoring goals and winning titles.”
