According to French media RMC Sports, for the opening day of the Olympic men’s football tournament, only 5,000 tickets were sold for the match between New Zealand and Guinea at the Nice Stadium, which can accommodate up to 35,000 people.
On the first day of the Olympic men’s football tournament, New Zealand’s Olympic team defeated Guinea’s Olympic team with a score of 2-1. More striking than the rather dull match was the largely empty stands, presenting an awkward sight. The game started at 5:00 PM local time when the weather was already cool, yet there were only a few scattered spectators in the stands of the Nice Stadium, which has a maximum capacity of 35,000.
After the match, the Nice city government confirmed to RMC that only 5,000 tickets had been sold before the game, and the actual number of spectators present may have been lower than this figure.
Following this match, the Nice Stadium will host the game between the United States women’s team and Zambia’s women’s team the next day. Then, on July 27, the French team, led by Henry, will face Guinea.
