In his column for German Sky TV, Lothar Matthaus shared his insights on the German national team, particularly emphasizing that with Toni Kroos’ return, Ilkay Gundogan might have to settle for a backup role in the upcoming Euros. Here’s an excerpt from Matthaus’ column:
Who will be our hero in the Euros? Who will lead the team towards the title? Young talents like Musiala and维尔茨, with their exceptional skills and scoring abilities, will undoubtedly be highlights of the tournament. But when it comes to the key figure who can steer the team with full support, that role belongs to Toni Kroos.
Kroos’ farewell scene in Madrid, filled with accolades, is unprecedented in German football. Apart from the Euros, he has won every major trophy. Why not let this crown be the perfect ending to his career? Respected by teammates and opponents alike, he plays for a nation always considered among the favorites, much like Messi and Ronaldo at top clubs, who also yearn for international glory, while Haaland hasn’t had such an opportunity yet.
Kroos is in good form and has the potential to be a secret weapon in the home-field Euro. One of the hot topics among German fans is the starting XI, especially regarding whether Gundogan or Sane will feature in the attacking trident. In my view, Musiala should occupy the number 10 position,维尔茨on the right wing, and Sane on the left. Gundogan’s form has been inconsistent, likely influenced by his mediocre performances at Barcelona compared to his standout years at Manchester City.
Kroos’ strong return almost guarantees a starting spot, otherwise, it would likely go to Gundogan. However, Nagelsmann might prefer the pace and skill of Musiala,维尔茨, and Sane in attack. Sane’s suspension for one match aside, he will return to the pitch once fit. Additionally, a player like Andrich, who can contribute both defensively and offensively, is needed to create more freedom for the front line.
For Gundogan, even when a more offensive push is required, he may not be the first choice substitute. In such situations, Thomas Muller or Niclas Fullkrug could be better options to boost the attacking power alongside Havertz. Gundogan is more suitable for controlling the tempo when we need to protect a narrow lead. His substitution in friendlies against the Netherlands and France suggests his current role in the squad. Sane, with his speed and unique skills, offers a different tactical option. Hence, despite my respect for Gundogan personally, and without any personal animosity, I believe he might find himself on the bench for this Euro tournament.
