Catalan media outlet World Sports Report has published an article pointing out that 23 athletes from FC Barcelona (not just the football team, but also including basketball, handball, volleyball, and beach volleyball teams) will be participating in the Paris Olympics. Among them, football player Kubasi will follow in the footsteps of Yamal, setting a new record for the men’s football team.
Born on January 22, 2007, Kubasi is the youngest registered player at the 2024 Olympics and the only player born in 2007. The second youngest is Argentine playmaker Claudio Echeverry, born in 2006. French winger Doue (19 years old) is the third youngest player. This means that should Kubasi take the field, he will become the youngest player at the Paris Olympics.
The Spanish media notes that Kubasi, who has played three times for the senior Spanish national team, could have been included in De la Fuente’s squad for the European Championship, but was left out at the last minute, partly due to the Olympic Games taking place this summer. Recently, FC Barcelona expressed their support for Kubasi to participate fully in the Olympic games, and Spain’s Olympic coach Santi Denia considers him a key player for the team.
At the 2024 European Championship, Barcelona’s Yamal broke records for the youngest player to appear and score in the tournament. Following the Olympics, Barcelona’s Kubasi will also break records. However, according to the IOC’s statistics, Kubasi’s record applies to this edition of the Olympics. Officially, the oldest goal scorer in Olympic men’s football history is Ryan Giggs (2012 Olympics, 38 years and 243 days), while the youngest is held by Peruvian Angel Urbina (1960 Olympics, 16 years and 332 days).
