Following Klay Thompson’s departure, the focus on the Golden State Warriors has been whether they can re-sign Stephen Curry or if they can still contend for a championship around him. Earlier, during the national team training camp, Curry made it clear that he wants the Warriors to be the only NBA team he plays for in his career. And the Warriors are planning accordingly.
Curry’s contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, and he is eligible for an extension this summer. Though not the most pressing matter for the Warriors, management has prioritized it. On Friday, Warriors General Manager Mike D’Antoni told the media, “Curry can have anything he wants with the Warriors. I can confidently say that he will remain a Warrior for his entire career.” He also mentioned that the Warriors are scouting players through the draft, free agency, and summer league, hoping to find someone who fits the team to make another title run. “Leveraging Curry’s influence is our top priority,” he added.
D’Antoni acknowledged that with Thompson gone, last season’s team won’t return, but he believes that minor tweaks could make a difference. D’Antoni said, “Despite winning 46 games last season, we didn’t make the playoffs. We just need some adjustments to bounce back. I think we’ve done that, and we’re excited about this team.”
This summer, the Warriors bolstered their roster with Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield, and De’Anthony Melton. D’Antoni noted that these three players fit the Warriors’ style of play and suggested that he might add one more player in the future, but not immediately. Fostering the growth of young players is his primary concern. “Free agency has calmed down. We have 14 players, and I like our team, but there are areas we need to improve. Our next goal is to develop our young players, which is doable,” D’Antoni said.
The core of what the Warriors are doing revolves around how to place the best players around Curry and Green for the next two years or longer. “Curry and Green are still performing at a very high level…We must carefully consider every decision to ensure we have a championship-caliber team,” D’Antoni concluded.
