The final of the European Championship is imminent, and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that midfield star Declan Rice will be the decisive factor in whether the Three Lions lift the trophy.
Ferdinand stresses that despite some criticism of Rice’s performance in this European Championship, he remains an indispensable pillar for England. Ferdinand argues that the reason Rice faces criticism is because he takes on all the dirty work for the English team.
“Declan is rock solid, tough. I know many people say he hasn’t shown much flair from the start of the tournament, saying he doesn’t do this or that, but I think he’s misunderstood. But without Rice, I don’t know how England would play? Who could replace him? That’s the issue, which also demonstrates Rice’s critical importance to the team.”
It’s worth noting that Declan Rice transferred from West Ham United to Arsenal in the summer of 2023, setting a club transfer fee record, reflecting his status and value in today’s football world. As the European Championship final approaches, many eyes are on Rice, hoping he can perform at his best on the biggest stage, helping the Three Lions realize their dream of winning the European Championship.
Besides Rice, Ferdinand also gave high praise to his midfield partner, Mount: “As the tournament progresses, the pressure on England increases, but Mount performs as if it’s just another day at the office. For a young player making his debut in a major event, his composure is admirable.”
Ferdinand also specifically mentioned two stars in the England squad who have gradually demonstrated their prowess – Foden and Grealish. In England’s semi-final victory over the Netherlands, Foden showcased his wide-ranging pitch coverage, frequently initiating attacks from the center and attempting shots. Ferdinand noted that if luck had been slightly better, this midfield prodigy from Manchester City could have scored in the semi-final. Additionally, Grealish’s performance in this European Championship has also been commendable.
