On June 1st, Beijing time, Italy announced its preliminary squad, and Juventus midfielder Locatelli was not included.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s head coach Spalletti explained why he left out Locatelli and apologized to him.
Spalletti said, “Not selecting Locatelli for the 2024 UEFA Euro squad is another regret. He’s a true professional with outstanding defensive skills and expertise in certain areas. However, when it comes to evolving his role within the team, he’s too conservative. I believe he’ll be back, and I apologize again for not calling him up.”
This season, the towering defensive midfielder made 40 appearances (38 as a starter) for Juventus, scoring one goal and providing six assists.
Spalletti also discussed Juventus forward Federico Chiesa, stating, “Chiesa knows how to play in any position; he’s a natural player who can operate on the right or stay central. We need to give Chiesa more space, not surround him with too many players, because it’s only when he has enough room and one-on-one opportunities that he truly shines.”
