According to reporter Susy Campanale, Polish referee Szymon Marciniak is currently the leading contender to officiate the Euro final, followed by Michael Oliver and Francois Letexier as alternatives, but their selection hinges on whether England and France reach the final.
Previously, multiple reports suggested that Italian referee Daniele Orsato would be in charge of the Euro final. The 48-year-old Orsato has been an international FIFA referee since 2010 and officiated the 2020 UEFA Champions League final. In this Euro tournament, he was involved in refereeing two group stage matches between England and Serbia, Portugal and Slovenia, as well as the quarterfinal between England and Switzerland. According to plans, he intends to retire after this Euro tournament.
However, such claims were quickly refuted. Susy Campanale stated that Orsato isn’t even among the contenders. The top favorite to officiate the final is actually the 43-year-old Polish referee Szymon Marciniak. This referee was the main official during the second leg of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. That match nearly ruined his reputation with four controversial calls; the most contentious being when he prematurely blew the whistle rendering Bayern’s equalizing goal invalid. He was also the referee for the 2022 Qatar World Cup final. In this tournament, he participated in officiating the group stage match between Belgium and Romania, and the round of 16 match between Italy and Switzerland.
Moreover, English referee Michael Oliver and French referee Francois Letexier are also under consideration. However, their selection will depend on whether England and France make it to the final.
