According to Argentine newspaper Ole, the French Football Federation (FFF) is furious about the behavior of Argentine players during their celebrations for winning the Copa America title.
In a statement, the FFF said, “The President of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, strongly condemns the racist remarks made by Argentine players and fans following their victory in the Copa America. These actions were even broadcast live.”
“In response to these acts that violate sportsmanship and values, the President of the FFF has decided to file a complaint with FIFA, accusing the Argentine Football Association of failing to prevent its players from engaging in racist behavior,” the FFF announced.
The incident stems from Argentina’s celebrations after securing the Copa America title. Enzo Fernandez live-streamed scenes of him celebrating with his teammates on his personal social media account.
Among the Argentine players, including Enzo and Emiliano Martinez, they sang an adapted song containing discriminatory remarks aimed at Kylian Mbappe and other French players: “They play for the French team but are from Angola. Their mothers are Nigerian, their fathers are from Cameroon. But their passports still say French.”
If FIFA investigates and confirms discriminatory conduct by Enzo and his teammates, they could face severe penalties, potentially even bans at the national team level.
Kylian Mbappe, whose father is Cameroonian, has not yet responded to the incident. On the afternoon of July 16th, Mbappe completed his unveiling ceremony at Real Madrid, a club he had dreamed of joining since childhood.
