In the Copa America final held on the 15th of this month, Argentina clinched the trophy by defeating Colombia thanks to a goal from Lautaro in extra time. After the match, Argentine mainstay midfielder Enzo Fernández sparked outrage online when he livestreamed from the locker room and loudly sang a racist song mocking mixed-race African players from the French national team.
According to French media reports, ten Chelsea players have already unfollowed Enzo over the racial discrimination incident. Beyond French players Malo Gusto, N’Golo Kanté, Badiashile, Fofana, Disasi, Nkunku, and Hugo Ecué, the list also includes Ivorian player David Fofana, Albanian player Broja, and Belgian player Lavia.
In response to Enzo’s extreme remarks, the French Football Federation (FFF) previously expressed strong dissatisfaction and announced that it will launch formal legal proceedings against the incident in the future. Earlier, Enzo himself issued a sincere apology on social media, explaining that his loss of control during the festivities led him to sing lyrics of an extremely offensive nature: “I want to sincerely apologize for the video I posted during our national team’s celebrations. The song contained deeply offensive language, words that are absolutely unforgivable. I am against any form of racial discrimination and apologize for my loss of control during our Copa America victory celebration. That video, that moment, those words do not reflect my beliefs or character. I truly am sorry.”
