In the Euro final, Palmer came off the bench to score but couldn’t save the day as England lost 1-2 to Spain, finishing runners-up for the second consecutive Euro. Post-match, English football legend Alan Shearer suggested this could be Southgate’s last game in charge of the England national team.
Shearer said, “I suspect this might have been Southgate’s last game. He’s done a good job from where he took over to where they are now. But domestically, English fans will still feel a deep sense of disappointment. Yes, we could have played better, but they made it to the final. However, when you’re standing here, you have to cross that line. The reality is, he took us to the final three years ago, and he’s taken us to the final again this time, but he hasn’t won either. It will hurt him deeply, and perhaps he’ll think it’s time for someone else to take over.”
Meanwhile, Southgate, speaking to ITV, said, “I don’t think now is a good time to make such a decision. I need to talk to the right people. Now is not the moment.”
