England manager Gareth Southgate has said he wants to address his contract situation after leading the team in this summer’s European Championship, believing that talking about an extension before the tournament would disrupt the squad.
Southgate took charge of the national team following the 2016 UEFA European Championship, guiding them to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the final of UEFA Euro 2020, and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. England are among the favorites to win the upcoming Euros.
With his current deal set to expire at the end of the year, Southgate addressed the speculation around his future: “We have to wait until after the Euros to talk about this. If I were to rush into something now, people would say, ‘You’re no different from Capello; you should prove yourself first.’ I’d like to discuss my contract after we’ve hopefully won the Euros in July, after the celebrations on Trafalgar Square. Discussing it beforehand would interfere with our preparations for the tournament.”
