Former England striker Alan Shearer has suggested in an interview with The Athletic that Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins should be in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI for the upcoming European Championship, with Harry Kane operating in a deeper number 10 position.
Shearer remarked, “Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Saka, and Kane are undoubted starters for England, all having had fantastic seasons. But there’s one spot up for grabs, and I believe Watkins deserves it. He’s what this England team needs.”
“Watkins can lead the line, with Kane dropping back to the No. 10 role. Bellingham and Rice can take on attacking midfield duties, while Foden and Saka would occupy the wings. Watkins has been the most improved player in the Premier League this season, scoring 16 goals and reaching the peak of his career.”
“Credit goes to Emery’s setup, which has seen Watkins utilize the width of the box effectively for his finishing. I always say defenders hate players running behind them, and that’s precisely what Watkins has done all season. His movement is a nightmare for defenders; he’s smart, quick, and always finds space in the box.”
England national team will face Brazil in an international friendly match on March 24th, Beijing time.
