According to reports by the BBC and The New York Times, UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) announced on June 23 that it will implement “additional safety measures” for the 2024 European Championship in response to a series of pitch invasions by fans.
During the second round Group F match between Portugal and Turkey, five spectators ran onto the field. They approached Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo seeking photos before being detained by security personnel. Portugal’s head coach Martinez commented after the game that the intruders were expressing their affection for the player, stating, “The fans’ intentions were good,” but he added, “If the intentions are wrong, then it becomes difficult.” We must also be aware that such situations can occur.” He expressed concern over potential harm to players.
UEFA subsequently declared that it would reinforce security measures the following day. Without divulging specific details due to security concerns, they assured that measures would be in place to prevent anyone from entering the pitch and coming close to the players.
Furthermore, UEFA warned that “any form of pitch invasion constitutes a breach of stadium regulations and will result in the ejection of those involved from the venue. In addition to being ejected, fans who invade the pitch will face criminal prosecution for their actions.”
